Five boats carrying more than 295 asylum seekers have been intercepted in the past 72 hours in Australian waters, said Home Affairs Ministers’ office.
According to initial information the five boats were carrying 41, 86, 66, 76 and 29 people respectively, in which Hazara Asylum Seekers were also present. Four boats were transferred in Christmas Island while one boat was stopped by the authorities near Ashmore Reef.
Border Protection Command has transferred some of them and will make arrangements for the rest to be transferred to Christmas Island for initial health, security and identity checking.
